Adenium Plant Care

Adenium obesum, also known as desert rose is a slowly growing plant which will add an extra beauty to our garden. It grows about 12 inches per year and don't require water as other plants do.

Adenium Care

One thing that will kill Adenium is watering. As adenium is a desert plant, it doesn't require much water like other plants do. Water the plants based on weather. Keep the soil moist in Summer and Spring, not saturated. Reduce the watering in Winter.  Check the soil periodically and allow it to dry completely before watering. Also, don't allow adenium to drench too much rain. It may lead to fungal infection, root rot issues.

Adenium do well in spring season as it gets enough sunlight to grow. So choose a spot in your home so that the plant will get ample light throughout the day.

As the names implies desert rose plant needs well-draining sandy soil.

Fertilize the plant one in a month with compost and bone meal. This will increase the growth and flowering. Do not feed the plant during winter. Giving flowering booster fertilizers like potash will increase the flowering. This has to be given based on the size and age of your plant.

Prune Adenium once every year will lead to the growth of new branches there by increase flowering. The best time to prune when the weather is cool. Pruning can be done in the month of October or February depends on the weather in our place.

How to Prune Adenium

  • Sterilize your pruning tool to avoid any infection.
  • Trim thin, weak or dead branches at this point.
  • Wipe the waxy liquid comes from the stem with a neat towel
  • Apply fungicide after pruning. This will help to avoid infections to the plant.
After pruning, in five to ten days, new shoots will sprout and soon after the branches will appear.
